Next year when it is half way grown cut it down. This produces bushier plants and more flowers to bloom at the correct time
My mums come back year after year, BUT I live in Southern California AND it depends on the type of mum. If you are in a colder climate where it snows, I would overwinter in a pot and set out next spring.
