Use a Plumb line. and start from there.
It's a good idea to do a plumb line in the middle and start there. The reason for starting in the middle is that when you reach the edges both sides will match. When you start at the edge, you may end up at the other side with room for only 1/2 of a tile. By starting in the middle, you'll have 1/4 of the tile at each end/side. Hope that helps.
Are you putting flooring on a wall and what kind? If using tiles, you will need to figure out if you will have to cut off any of the edges to make them fit and where do you want those pieces to be placed.
