use finishing nails. they have small head so you can counter sink them
I would use brad nails with a nailer or the smaller finishing nails if you are doing it by hand. You will need a nail punch if you are doing it by hand. Regular nails will split the wood.
Agreed. Use finishing nails and after you counter-sink them, fill in the holes with wood filler, then paint or stain.

No, you will need to use finishing nails and then calk over the holes.
Definitely finish nails. Nail into the baseboard not the floor. Countersink and fill the holes.
