Refinishing Steps and a Staple Holes

I am removing carpeting up the steps to the second floor, and of course there are a lot of staples; some bigger than others. I intend to sand and re-stain. Do I need to fill the little holes left by the staples? So far the average per tread and riser has to be at least 30, so we are talking close to 500 holes. Thank you .

Yes. Get a sustainable wood filler (I like elmers)...you may wish to consider new treads

  @Moxie - thank you very much! Brooklyn, IN - where is that in relationship to Bloomington? My daughter, who when to school at IU, is in the process of looking for her first home in IN.

  Ed, Brooklyn is north and east of Bloomington; it's actually closer to Indianapolis, it seems to me. Where is she thinking of relocating? We live in north central Indianapolis and are considering moving to the country ourselves. Best advice if she's going to buy a home is to stay out of the Indy area...property taxes are high. @

I don't know if I would fill in all those staple holes ...I'd just sand over them them and let it go at that ..Those holes are awfully small and unless you are on your hands and knees crawling up or down the steps , you are not going to notice them anyway..Unless you're OCD .. :)
