When it comes to gas fireplaces, I would call a fireplace expert to check them over to make sure everything is properly installed and ready to operate. It may be money well spent.
I also agree that you should have a professional check up on the set-up. If something's not right, you could end up with a fire in the wall. It sounds like one of them was capped at one time - was that removed or did it fall apart? Why was it capped? Is there a hole in the brick? It's best to have a through inspection so that you know for sure. I hope that helps.
We had our wood-burning fireplace converted to a gas log fireplace, and yes, it still requires a flue and opening at the top of the chimney. I would ask you local fire department if they can check it out or recommend what to do. Reason is, If they are not properly vented, you could cause unsafe levels of gases to enter your home.
I would urgently suggest you call in a Gas expert to give you their opinion, because otherwise they could be deadly......
Gas logs need a flu. This is true unless it is a direct vent fireplace. Direct vent usually vent through the wall. I don't think you have that. Your gas logs should work, but make sure all parts of the chimney are in good condition and the logs are placed correctly.
I would guess that hole in the brick is the problem, BUT I would definitely call a professional. I don't know where you live, but if you have a furnace that chimney is still in use and if it's leaking water, it needs to be fixed before it causes major damage.
