it kinda depends on the finish. multiple layers of paint may need a heat gun and a scraper, not so many layers just the paint stripper. some will sand the finish off- do use a mask if you do this.
Try Citristrip. I've seen people apply it and then wrap it in plastic wrap. Let it sit overnight and scrape it off.
I recommend Citri Strip.
