They actually make a succulent/cactus potting soil. I water my cactus and succulent when they are completely dry. I put the pot they are in in a small dish of water and leave for about 1-2 hours. They will drink all they need. Then take the pot out. Don't overwater, they are full of weather anyway, and overwatering can cause them to rot.

I just use a good quality house plant soil. Let dry down between waterings.
Use the soil for cacti. Wal-Mart usually has it but this time of year you might have to ask for help in finding it.
