How do you hook up a house for a whole-house filter system?

I have been in the hardware business for almost 40 years, i would not recommend a water filter tied into the main. Water filters are rated by the amount of gallons they can filter before becoming full of contaminants and thus ineffective. After "x" amount of gallons they need to be replaced. Think about it, if you tie it into the main (as in whole house ) you are filtering all of your water. Toilet water, laundry water, bathing water...both hot and cold. You are much better off installing a filter on the cold water side of the faucet you typically use for drinking water. Most people do this under the kitchen sink, The reason for this is because you extend the life of the filter greatly by only filtering the water you drink instead of all the water in the house. If your filter is rated for 2000 gallons (typical), installing it on the main would yield a lifespan of just over a month. It would last over a year on average before you have to replace it by only filtering the cold water under the kitchen sink. Undersink system are designed to be installed easily by the average person without the need of a plumber. They simply connect with flexible lines. Usually you only need an adjustable wrench and a screwdriver. You can do it yourself for less than $50 for a basic unit. I also recommend an inline water filter on the icemaker line for your ice cubes. These run about 20 bucks and can be done in 10 minutes ..

there are certain areas that may not need the water filtered....the garden hoses for example.water for the flushing toilets. The plumbers know.

Look for the main shut off water . if you live in warmer winter area it should be on front of house if you live with town water. Well water look closest to well. Hope you find it.

not all water sources need filtering...it’s useully just the drinking water..., are having an issue with the waters taste filter just your water. I have a water softener..not good for drinking. there are water softeners that will remove iron and other nasty tasting things.
