Cut around the damaged portion of the hole to make the edge even. Use blue tape to tape a piece of paper to cover the hole and use the edge of a pencil or crayon to scribble over the circle edge to show the hole edge. Cut out the hole edge on the paper and use as a template on a new piece of drywallCut a piece of drywall as close to the template as possible.

Place the patch inside the hole. Probably you can use spackle to hold it in place, but it might be a better idea to place an adhesive into what the hole in the edge was sticking to. Then spackle the cracks and smooth it over. Then paint.

Look up drywall repair on YouTube to seers several videos on this, and cherry - pick what you think will work for you.

You can put a string in the middle of a heavy cardboard and then put into the back of the hole. Pull the string and tie to a small nail on the side of the hole. Start patching with your spackle slowly to build up until it is even with the outside. When it is totally dry, cut the string and then smooth over that location again. Sand carefully until even with the surface of the board. Prime and then put your finish paint on.

For a hole that size, cutting a new drywall patch is the more permanent and better looking solution. See this Youtube video to learn how. This is not as hard at it seems. It will take several days to go through all the steps. If you take your time, no one will ever know! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K37G2j0K8BA
