Go to a local garden center and ask questions. What are good plants for your area, the best way to plant them, etc. Start small! Take pictures of where you think you want plantings to go. They will be more than happy to answer your questions.

As was mentioned in an earlier comment start out small. Find the area you want to plant. Graph out what you want in your garden so that you can figure out what to plant. Different plants need different spacing and light requirements. You need to figure out what plants you can use for your planting zone with the light the garden area has in mind. Start with a small section of the garden you want and dig up the grass and weeds. Do one area at a time and expand from there so you don't get too frustrated by taking on too much. Say you want a garden from your front steps to the corner of the house. I would start by the steps and work out towards the corner. You will be able to see your accomplishment quicker and also see if there is something you want to change with the outline of the garden or what you want to plant where before you are committed with the whole garden done. Send us a picture of the area and what kind (flower or veggie) and the lighting you have so we can help you with any other questions.

A great deal depends on your choice of plant to be started. Someone has mentioned a garden center. That a good idea. You might check with your local detention agent also. Have fun. I love growing things and planting them.
