In Michigan there may not be that many that are winter hardy. I know my mom had hens and chicks that came back every year in her patio garden that was huge. You would have to check on the succulents you want to make sure they would survive. You could make yourself a succulent garden in pots and bring them in for the winter. My hubby and I made a terrarium out of our sons large critter tank that he had laying around from when he had a tarantula, and had planted some in their already for habitat. Two plants were still alive and thriving, so we replaced all the soil with new and purchased a whole lot of new succulents and planted them. The critter tank is about 24 inches square and about 30 inches high so we could plant lots of different sizes. It also had a door in front that made it easy to work with. You could do that in the house, they take little care, just mist and water only occasionally as it holds the humidity it needs to thrive. Even a person like me that has a black thumb when it comes to houseplants, hasn't had a problem with a terrarium.
I love Nancy Turner's idea. I would suggest keeping your succulents in pots and moving them inside during cold weather into something like the terrarium if you want them outside when weather permits.
Hi Laura, tell me what a succulent is? I am from MI also, so I will try to help you, ok? With it in the fall/winter time, you may have to begin this in a garage, or bedroom, until spring comes. Give me more info, ok? Don't worry, or down grade yourself of being terrible with a green thumb, perhaps no one has really helped you, to care for your garden, in the proper manner. Waiting for your note. J.
Laura, this can be started in a egg carton, also, until spring comes, and then I will show you how to begin to place this outside, when the temp gets alot warmer, ok? Just remember, if I can do it, you can also, it all takes times, and patience to learn the diff methods of caring for plants., and soil. Best wishes, J.
Thank you, I did install this, and I will keep your invite, and use this. At the present we have 50 African Violets, and others, so we truly love them, each has their own personality, and design. One of the favorites, has a curved edge blossom petal and we call this one, our ruffled.violet, it is so lovely. We love this one, for each blossom, has maybe 5 petal blossoms, and 3 out of 5 petals are white with purple, and 2 are plain. Each is so diff., we also have a blue violet, so that is diff., and several white ones. OK, I will let you go, and enjoy your day after Thanksgiving day. Have a blessed day, and thank you so much, for the chart, and info. J.
