We had the same thing happen. We replaced our furnace a short time after the room with the thermostat had been painted and the size and shape were different. Part of the "deal price" we got required us to use the thermostat that came with it. My ex-husband owned a company that sold thermostats (among other heating/cooling things) so I was used to having the latest thermostat so that he could personally test them. Therefore I had no problem getting an updated thermostat except that the new one was smaller. First we tried a "backer" which is a larger piece of plastic that matches the thermostat and fits behind it. That wasn't enough. We had to fill in the holes with spackling paste, tape off the new thermostat, then repaint that wall. Thankfully we had the same paint and the wall was small. We only did the whole wall just to make sure it looked right. You might be able to just paint the patch. Good luck with your project.

Go on you tube and see how to repair a hole in the drywall. The hardware store should have quarter pieces you can buy if the hole is real big. Otherwise, you can use some thick cardboard to patch small areas.
