Replacing carpets/baseboards

My house was built in 1957, not updated much. I'm considering replacing carpet in most of the rooms. Are baseboards done before or after carpet for best results? or is it better to refinish hardwood underneath. Is there a usual order of what to do first, painting, possible popcorn removal from ceiling etc? Thanks.

If you are replacing the carpet anyway... go ahead and paint... the old carpet will act like the painters tarp... and catch any spills or drops.

Many houses from the 1950's have hard wood floors underneath the carpet and refinishing them... if they are in good shape will be well worth the cost. Area rugs or carpets can be put down to add interest or color... and to keep your feet warm in winter... then taken up in summer (clean before storing).

new baseboards will go down after painting walls, installing new carpet or after refinishing floors... paint or stain them, before putting them in... so you don't have to worry about masking them off to keep paint off walls, carpet or flooring. Then just touch them up after installation.

if you are planning to do messy work...do that first. if you are doing most of the house start with the rooms furthest from the exterior doors and work to the doors. that way you lessen the chances of dragging debre thru the new stuff.

  • Remove the popcorn ceilings first. I work from top down. All other suggestions are great too!

Make sure you patch the walls before painting. It really makes a huge difference.
