Do I have to know how to winterize a sprinkler system if I have one? I was told that it’s not necessary if the in ground pipes were of pcp piping. , and not metal piping .

How cold does it get? PVC (pcp?) is also subject to rupture from hard freeze. It is easy enough to cut off the water source, and let the piping run dry.

Digging it up to find the leak can ruin your day, and your lawn

it should be fine as long as it’s underground, however if you have a back flow prevention valve above ground it will need to be wrapped just like your above ground water pipes.

In Utah, we winterize no matter what the pipe material is. When the ground freezes, if there is water in the pipes expanding and shrinking with the cold, any type of pipe can crack. We turn off the system and drain all the remaining water out of the pipes

I have always had pvc pipes and they need to be blown out in the fall so they won't freeze and crack. They use generators to blow out the water. Call irrigation companies.

If you get hard frost and your ground freezes at all in winter you should.
