we need sight/sound barrier in an alley with minimal sunlight. Arborvitaes still growing only on top. Would like natural cover and avoid a fence, if possible. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Italian spruce - fast growing tall and thin. Can be grown close together. Very nice.

Whatever shrub you grow, if you don't prune the tops, they will become straggly and bare at the base.... the trick is to nip the top leaf pairs to stimulate the lower lateral buds to keep the plant bushy. Nip arbor vitae back at the top .... and you should see new growth on the trunks lower down if they aren't too far gone.

unfortunately too far gone at this point.

but thank you so much, appreciate your response/suggestion.

I would make a window quilt, to put over the window area. When you choose to open it, use a spring rod, and lift this up to the height that you want. For a patter, use a pretty design, and then get some padding, that is thick, and cover this with the pretty material. Cover the foam, and the material, and have a diff material on the other side. This will last you for many yrs., plus keep the room warmer, and no sound effects from another person. Hope this helps you, for I have made many, and change mine, for a diff. pattern, per season. Best wishes, J.
