Please help! Mermaid Lamp

Linda Dorn
by Linda Dorn
I have this gold mermaid and would like to make a lamp out of it. I stacked up some sea shells around the bottom. Should I paint the mermaid a different color? Any ideas on making a lamp would be helpful. Thank you

What is this lovely gal made of ? Are you sure she isn't really valuable, before you drill a hole in her ? LOL Does she have a hole or two to run lamp wiring through ? Maybe take her to a local lamp store and see what they'd do ? She's beautiful. I wouldn't change her one bit. :)

She is beautiful don't do anything to her. whatever you do don't paint her. Want to sell her.?

Hi, I'm not sure what she is made of, it is like a plaster but hollow inside. Great idea of taking her to a lamp store to see if they can drill a hole. I don't think she is valuable. Thank you so much for your feedback. Linda

Yes I'm looking to sell her. I live in Ca. near the beach and I have a shop that takes my item on consignment. I found this beautiful mermaid and wanted to do something unique with her. Thank you for your feedback. Linda

I would paint it. I would use a nice sea blue for the base color and paint a white over top and distress the top so the white shows through. By painting it, it would give it a more of a beachy feel. I love the shells added to the base.

Wow! I will have to think about that. Thank you. Linda

I paint everything...but I wouldn't paint her. She is aged to perfection.

@Barbara Brewer Thank you for the info. I think that might be better than drilling throw the mermaid and maybe taking the chance of maybe breaking it. Linda

It looks like most responses are not to paint. Thank you so much for your feedback. Linda

If I had her, I'd take my white wooden tray that I throw bills into, and line it with something and add white sand and her sorting her shells. She's just so nice to look at. She doesn't have to be useful.

That is also a good idea. Thank you for your feedback. Linda

how much would you like for the mermaid?
    • Linda Dorn Linda Dorn on Mar 26, 2014
@Linda I had not thought of just selling the mermaid alone. Maybe $35 but I would be scared to ship her as she might get broke. Linda

I would look for a skinny lap and take off the base to attach it to a weathered board. Shape the board with curves to soften the look. Attach the mermaid with putty that can make her removable at a later date if you wish, glue on the shells and you have a lamp.

NO-o-o-o! Don't paint her. I love to paint everything but, she is valuable. Do your research. Do like the others suggested and put tubing around her for a lamp. Don't drill into her or paint her. You can always make a pretty shade.

Yes use the outside lamp parts Barbara suggested and you could always decorate those pieces with coral , or seaweed etc. to make them a part of the scene Please post pictures of what you do here.

Set her on a base sand colored and use a off-set bent pipe to build with socket and use a clip on shade.
    • Linda Dorn Linda Dorn on Mar 27, 2014
@Vickie Moore Great Idea. I sold the mermaid to a lady on hometalk that loved her so much she is going to give her to a friend. Thank you for your feedback. Linda
