my front door went from a dark no light hard wood door to bright white natural lighting in. my initials plans were to put down some square tiles that reflected the light... the squares would of been okay but they refused to stick to the underlayment.... so my pondering has been to full piece of laminate flooring or tile that requires the mud and grout (NOT my favorite) definitely need lighter flooring because I new steps will be dark like the rail
new door
old door
old door day time and flash on when taken
outside of old door
after and before side by side

  • I would check out the clearance and closeouts at your local home stores. I have found flooring for next to nothing and the click in place laminates or even tiles are so easy to use! The laminate flooring cleans up really easy and so far my dogs have not scratched it up like my wood engineered flooring. I actually used my air compressor and 2" brad nailer to put the floor in place using the lip as placement for the nails.

It is some work, but the whole job will look and last so much better if you take up the flooring that is there now. Take it down to the subfloor and then you can put whatever you want in to replace the original floor.

I agree with Micapaci, tear up the floor and get down to the sub floor before adding anything else on top. I also like C. Renee Fullers idea of searching for the clearance in the flooring stores. It seems like a small area, so you should be able to find some great flooring. It is hard to tell by the pictures, but the steps could be stained darker? You can find some great lock in place laminates with so many options. I used one for my kitchen floor that looks like stone. I have had people ask if it is stone and they bend over to feel it. Good luck!

my floor has only the subfloor and an underlayment on it now first [picture shows it my steps will be replaced/ stained bc they are pressed wood so when it gets wets it swells and disinagrates. right now I have clear enamel them... I went to my flooring store here local and for that small area it was going to cost 100.00 just for supplies ...will be going to menards this weekend...
    • @Jennifer Bender definitely check the back areas and you have to look for clearance and closeouts! I always find them hidden LOL I found flooring for a 12 x12 area for under $40! it was laminate click in place- so easy to do and it was a closeout no longer sold. You may need to borrow an air compressor and 2" brad nailer if you do not have one so that you can careful nail the floor down. Good luck!

Being a high-traffic area, I would personally go for a commercial-grade or other durable sheet vinyl. It's a small enough area that it probably won't cost all that much more than getting some lesser product and will also increase the odds of finding a remnant! In addition to flooring stores, check ReStores in your area and Craigslist. Don't settle on style or performance!

I don't know why you need to tear up the floor, leave the floor alone ...I would also recommend Vinyl at the front door .. ( Fiber Floor , by Tarkett has it ...)

We just put a high-end Tarkett vinyl through our lonnnnng kitchen and, while it's not everyone's style, WE love it! Even though it was one of their heavy-duty products, it was still less than many vinyls and much less than tile or wood. It's super comfortable to walk and stand on, durable and easy to clean. It's in a high-traffic area where our FOUR dogs are in and out all day long. :)

Take down to the subfloor. I'd go with porcelain tile with a bit of texture , and install on the diagonal to add interest and visually increase the space. It will be waterproof, non-slippery and any dirt, sand, etc. tracking in won't scratch the surface like a vinyl would. Will look more expensive. Doesn't have to be super light as you have lots of light coming in. There are lots of colours to choose from - think I'd get a motley coloured tile to give more versatility in case you change paint colours.
