Trim and Wall the Same Color

I was just reading where keeping trim and wall color all the same is big for 2014 and makes a room look bigger. I paint my walls in flat always just like the look better. So if I were to paint my trim the same as the walls could I follow through with all flat. Normally I do trim in a satin but all the same color might look weird with different finishes. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

  • The color remains the same, but the finish is changed. Do not want flat for trim or it would be a horror to keep clean. You would be amazed that the same color would look entirely different from going flat, to satin, to semi-gloss to gloss. I have seen where folks have painted vertical stripes on their walls going from flat to satin and it looks amazing. Even with a basic white color.

@Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com I already have flat on the walls so that's why I was wondering. I agree the same color looks completely different depending on the finish. I prefer flat because in my experience it makes the room appear larger. Thanks for your comment

Depends on your baseboard color , size of room

@Beverly Stamp Interesting - baseboards are natural cedar stained.
  • I have seen the same trim color (in a small) in a home and it was blah (in my opinion). I think trim adds a bit of character to a room. What makes a room look or feel larger is wall color and furniture and its placement. But decorating is a personal choice and the trends change from year to year and painting trim is not something I enjoy LOL but Woodbridge is right, you do not want flat trim because it is harder to clean and trim can get really dusty dirty. You could always try one wall and see how it looks. But before you do all the trim, I would only do one wall or maybe 2. good luck1

I prefer natural woodwork myself, but the answer to your question is in what you like. It's not important to be trendy, it's important to find a look you like and would enjoy living with.

@KathrynElizabeth Etier I agree do what you like but I'm getting the house ready to sell - it's about three years out but I need to get this remodel done. So I've left out what I really want because I'm waiting to accomplish that at my next home.

I always do trim in an easy-to-clean finish. For me, that means semigloss, but satin would work too. And I kind of have to laugh. We just bought our house in November, and I've been repainting. One of the first things I did was paint the painted woodwork a crisp white, to contrast against the painted walls. I left all stained woodwork alone. All this means is to paint it how you would like it.

In my MIL's house, I painted one wall in her dining room a deep burgundy as an accent wall. I used an eggshell finish (still looks matte, but it's easier to clean than flat) and I painted the floor trim (just on that one wall) the same deep burgundy color but in semi-gloss. The other 3 walls are painted a lovely cream in eggshell with the trim the same cream color but in semi-gloss. It looks amazing.
