I have lots of spindles and had been wanting to do something with them. I finally found what I needed to attach the pots to the spindle and create an herb stand. It could also be used for an organizer of bathroom things, crayons, or craft supplies.
Simply attach a base to a spindle using wood glue and a screw. Also attach a finial to the top. In this case I used wood glue and a finial I salvaged from a bed post. Paint to your desired color.
I found some cute buckets at Michael's in the dollar section. I used one hole straps from the hardware store (found in the electrical section) to attach the buckets.
This one was painted with Dollar bill and washed with Rushmore, both from American Paint company, followed by wax.
This one was painted with White Ash from Farmhouse Paint and no wax or top coat needed.
This one was painted with creamy linen from Farmhouse Paint and dry brushed with surfboard from APC then waxed.

What about drainage. Shoudl I put a platter under the "cup tree" to catch any left over liquid?

Yes, great idea and like you said- I can also see one done in primary colors- buckets and spindle for kids art supplies- colored pencils, paint brushes, crayons, markers!!! This is an awesome idea! I also like someones idea for the coffee mug tree- just make sure the base is wide enough so it wont tip when you take a mug out from one side or the other.
