Uses for compost

Question

I've been learning how to make compost. Is compost beneficial for flowering plants, or mostly for my fruit trees and veggie plants?

I got to mostly agree with @Lori J but would caution you on the makeup of the compost, some can get to acidic, etc... and that is not a good thing - best bet is to contact your local cooperative for advice from local gardeners

I have a plastic bag- the gallon zipper kind, full of banana and orange peels, apple cores, overripe fruit and eggshells, etc, I'm keeping it in my freezer until I'm ready to plant some herbs or veggies, to keep bugs out of my kitchen, and to keep my dog out of the bag. Now how do I make it into compost? How do I break it down?Should I cut everything up into small pieces?And will the moisture from the fruit peels be enough, or do I need to add a bit of water?

Thank you for the suggestions but this doesn't answer my question becauseI don't know how to break it down-I assume that I shouldn't just mix fruit peels, overripe fruit, etc with potting soil- in their original sizes- should I chop up the 'ingredients' I have for my compost?I'm afraid if I put it into the blender the banana peel will break the blender.help!

I just made the switch from mulch to compost this year. Found out about how much more beneficial it was, so I went to our local landfills and got a bunch. It was much more economical that way.
