  • 1. Gently wash the leaves, removing any garden debris.
  • 2. Lay out the leaves, sandwiching them between dry paper towels. Place them in the microwave.
  • 3. Microwave at 30 second intervals or until leaves are dry and crispy. Our usual drying time is 1 minute.

ANTS? Easy, Safe Solution!

An exterminator told my friend that when you begin to see ants, they are the scouts. Stop these and you won't have ants. My son discovered that if you spray them with Windex (or any other glass cleaner), they are exterminated. Keep after it for a while and you won't have ants. We have used this for years. 2 days ago our humming bird feeder leaked onto the concrete front porch...the liquid got down in the crack between brick and concrete so there was not way to flush it out. Ants ...»
appeared quickly, I sprayed them with Windex. Watched through the day and kept spraying them. Now ant free! Safe for kids, pets and environment! It is worth a try before you spend hundreds.

Front Walkway built out of inexpensive cement pavers, red lava rocks, and solar lights

Our home had a simple walkway with cement pavers, which proved to be a hassle when we mowed the lawn. We finished the walkway simply by digging up the grass, adding red lava rocks, ...»
flowers, and solar lights to boost up our curb appeal!

  • You'll need: mason jar or baby food jar with sealable lid, kitchen sponge, hammer and nail, heavy-duty string, sponge, sugar, scissors, saucepan and flower stickers or decorative tape (optional). 2
  • 1. Prepare "butterfly food" by mixing nine parts water with one part sugar. If you are using a mason jar for your feeder, use tablespoons, and if you are using a baby food jar, use teaspoons.
  • 2. Using a nail and hammer, punch a small hole in the center of the lid. A piece of a sponge will need to fit snuggly in the hole, so keep it small – you can always make it bigger if necessary.
  • 3. Cut a 1/2 inch strip from your sponge, then pull it through the hole in the lid so about half of the sponge is sticking out from the top – you'll want the sponge to be a tight fit.
  • 4. Before you tie any string around the jar, decorate your jar with brightly colored stickers, construction paper or washi tape. Flower shapes and bright colors are great options, because they'll imitate the real deal.
  • 5. Use your string to make a hanger. Flip your jar upside down. Tie some string around the neck of the jar (slightly below the lid). Cut two more pieces of string that are about two feet long.
  • That's it! Now you can hang your feeder outside. It will work best if it's placed about six inches higher than your tallest flowers. 3

Note: Some evidence suggests dyes may have negative health effects on humming birds. If you have humming birds in your region, we suggest making this sugar solon without dyes and making your jar extra colorful, instead!

  • I grabbed an empty jar, some flat sided marbles and some good glue
  • I glued the marbles all over the jar in a random pattern. 1
  • I then took a solar light from the Dollar Tree and took the long pole off. I dropped the light part, solar cell at the bottom, into the jar
  • I spray painted a leftover wooden stake a dark blue and screwed the cap of the jar lid into the pole.
  • And then screwed the jar onto the lid. Not only does it shimmer in the sunlight, it gives off a soft blue glistening glow at night thanks to the solar light inside.
Should the light quit working,
I can simple untwist it and replace the battery in the light. 1

Something for Nothing! Build Raised Planting Beds for Free!

Who says you can't get something for nothing? I just finished two raised beds made from my neighbor's old shutters and odds and ends of left over wood, then painted them with surplus deck ...»
paint! ZERO COST!!

For quite a while, I have admired all sorts of wonderful homemade and commercial raised beds seen on Pinterest and Hometalk. Because I couldn't justify the cost of buying the lumber and didn't want to tackle disassembling pallets, raised beds did not seem to be in my future. But then, our neighbors replaced their shutters and were nice enough to give them to me when I asked. They know by now that a repurposing project is about to get underway.

You could do other configurations, but I used two shutters on each side and one-half a shutter for the ends. That used up all ten of the free shutters. Odds and ends of lumber stored in the garage rafters came down and became corner, end and middle supports. I even had enough wood screws from another project to use for this one!
