Want to expand patio. Can I use pavers?

Bought a fixer upper. Yards were neglected and I'm slowly improving. For some reason, previous owners didn't extend patio from pool to fence, so some wasted space for entertaining since back deck is not very big. Are using pavers a good alternative to pouring concrete? And how do I get started?
Weedy area as well as rocks that previous owners had scattered. Larger rocks mark boundary between patio and side yard.

Hi @Cdbellflower This space screams as an evening hideaway for chilling out. One easy quick fix might be to just use some round-up on the weeds and pebble this in. Add tall seating vignettes along the fence (like a few outdoor pub tables with high stools) and some container gardens that sit on the pebbles nearest the pool. Add some clay pot hangers on the fence with a thriller and spiller in it to add a little character near each settee. Use big pots to grow sunflowers or use the cheap a butterfly seed mix and you will have an instant pretty-up while you really consider what you want in the space. A second idea and If it were "me"..(since I'm a gardener).... I'd pebble a walk path down the middle and plant something along both sides. Corn, okra, beans because they all grow up and not out. You could put a little seating at the culdesac and still use the garden path as extra entertaining seating-a garden is always a conversation piece and would make good use of this untidy space.

@Cdbellflower ... I love @Pamela Scruggs ideas above, especially with taking advantage of the fence's vertical space. I too like the idea of adding a pebbled walk, but remember to prep the ground and tamp just as you would with adding pavers. of course pavers is an option, with a little research a very doable diy project esp. over what looks like a relatively small area. Whatever you choose I like the idea of counterpoint against the pool deck's concrete (I assume). Stepping stones with beds on one or both sides could also be an option. I wonder though based on the current situation what the sunlight & drainage condition is here... shade plants still require some sun and if water pools here, you may have to make an effort to move it away first. All and all, a good problem to have, lots of possibilities. Cheers and good luck! ~jb

Pamela's ideas are great. If and when you decide for a more permanent solution, search on the internet for "how to install paver walkway". There are several YouTube videos. But a search on HomeTalk will also give yu more ideas.

Were you able to get this project done? I am curious what you did and how it turned out.

Round Up is in our water supplies and in our food supply and so in nearly everyone's bloodstream now. Obviously it might be better to use a little muscle power.

How long have you lived there? Does it drain well? If yes then be prepared to dig and work for a proper job you must dig out then and add sand then a bed of gravel then as you go you make sure you have a level. Yes check out videos because work and cost not worth it in my opinion. I would lay down newspaper since over time is bio degreed able, then a good layer over dirt then pebbles with a few pavers incorporated so you don't slip and have the what you are going for which is useful space. Hit goodwill and habitat for humanity stores as well as the other basic stores for good deals and play with color and night lighting. You may not want to put plants by pool since chemicals in water may kill them but along fence would look great to stagger them, have fun. Oh newspaper is for killing weeds without chemicals.
