Vintage Cabinet Re-Doodle-Do

You never know where inspiration will strike! A trip to a local farm gave me the idea for this vintage cabinet re-doodle-do. I created the finish using several "rooster colors" from American Paint Company clay chalk and mineral paint.
BEFORE SHOT: The moment I saw this handmade vintage cabinet, I knew I would keep the great alligatored finish on the doors...and lose the pink top and ugly purple gingham fabric panels.
I thought chicken wire would look cool on the doors so I nicknamed this piece The Rooster Cabinet. Then we took a trip to the farm and saw the real deal up close. That's where I found the perfect color scheme for this piece!
I started with a base coat of American Paint Company's Fireworks Red on the top and sides of the cabinet.
Then I randomly swiped two more colors Leather Boots (brown) and Amber Waves of Grain (gold) over the red. It looks a little crazy at this point, doesn't it?
The final coat of paint was done in American Paint Company's Cannonball, a rich black. When it dried, I came back and wet-distressed to blend and reveal the other colors underneath it. Here's what it looked like at this point:
The finish seemed dull and muted... until the piece was sealed with American Paint Company dark wax. You can see the difference between the waxed and unwaxed sides in this photo. The wax really made the colors pop.
This piece was handmade--a long time ago! It needed a lot of work to shore it up while retaining its rustic charm. Please check out our All Things New Again Blog for the full story behind this project and more photos.

I like the finished product but hubby is not as liberal in such things, so I am restricted to stain only.
    • @Kelley My hubby usually doesn't like my crazy paint jobs either... He hates to see nice wood painted over, but this piece already had weird pink and blue paint on it when I found it. :)

I just love rustic old pieces like this, and you did a wonderful job, the colors are perfect. Great job.
