Carpet or Refinish Hardwood
Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Z on Apr 02, 2014I'd refinish the hardwood as it's much easier to clean than urine that has soaked through a carpet. If your dog has favorite spots to pee, you might think about using pee pads in those places to further protect your floor.Helpful Reply

Shari on Apr 02, 2014Under the circumstances, refinishing would probably be the best option, especially if you could have them sealed to make pet accidents easier to clean. However, if you want a little of the softness, texture or color that rugs provide, you might consider indoor/outdoor rugs over the hardwood areas. Indoor/outdoor rug manufacturers are offering many really nice options these days and the best part is they are more budget friendly than regular rugs. If you ever decide to lay carpet again at some point down the road, you won't have an arm and leg invested in rugs if you go with the indoor/outdoor type. Plus, I love the fact that they are super easy to clean. Just take them outdoors and spray with the hose! I not only use them outdoors on my patio but I have 4 inside my house in high traffic areas.Helpful Reply

Janet Smith on Apr 02, 2014Hardwood can be sealed so urine will not soak into it. I vote for refinishing the floor!Helpful Reply

The Garden Frog with C Renee on Apr 02, 2014What you need to do is find out how much to refinish the hardwoods. I know that in my area it is cheaper to buy carpet. Urine on hardwood floors discolors if left and can ruin the wood/ floors. Pet urine is strong and can ruin any finish. I think carpet is a personal choice and it is what you want. I prefer carpet and most of my home is carpeted. I love to vacuum (which as I have gotten older I only do every other day) and hate to sweep (which I have to do every day). I have 1 long hair dog, 1 short haired dog, and 2 cats and carpet hides hair and dirt (in my opinion). My dogs have had a couple accidents in the 3 years that they have owned us and my cats go outside to do their business. I do use rugs for the front and back doors and bathrooms but no longer in the kitchen since I was washing them so much that they literally fall apart. So the questions to ask your yourself would be 1) do you carpet? 2) do you see advantages in keeping carpet (like warmer floors) 3) what is the expense of doing carpet or refinishing the floors good luck on your decision.Helpful Reply

Camille Carlin on Apr 03, 2014We have had an incontinent dog in the past. The vet prescribed Proin for her. A Pill. She never had an accident again. I think the hardwood refinishing is definitely the better choice. When we moved in our new home two years ago we were concerned about doggie toenails scratching the finish on our floors. We ended up getting maple floors in a natural finish, which is VERY light - like a basketball court. Scratches from the dog do not show nearly as much as they would have with a darker stain. Our product was Bona Traffic and we've been very happy with it. This product is water based and costs more but will not turn amber over the years.Helpful Reply

Bobbi on Apr 04, 2014Thank you for the suggestions. Cost wise it would have been about the same in our area except adding in the area rug, but with the suggestion for the indoor outdoor carpet that would make that easier. I was leaning toward refinishing but I was concerned that if urine got in the wood somehow it would ruin the floor. For the most parts accidents are cleaned up right away but sometimes she won't go in her crate for my son and she may be out a few hours until I either get up in the morning or come home from work. One time the air conditioner leaked on a refinished floor after a storm while I was at work and the floor buckled because of it. I will look into the product above.Helpful Reply
