need to remove dirty caulking from around commode and replace the caulk. Saw a good post on how to do that but I cannot find it now. The old caulk is so hard that I cannot remove it. Have tried to soften it by using goof off and that does not work.

  • Using a heat gun or hair dryer should soften the caulk. Then use a stiff 1 inch putty knife and you should be good to go! No pun intended.

I've had good luck with very hot, wet towels. Especially with super dried out caulking. Just put the wet towels on the caulking and wait a few minutes… Be aware that a heat gun gets HOT (I know, I'm stating the obvious) and can damage flooring so use care not to burn vinyl tiles, linoleum or carpeting. Tile is usually okay, but they can crack if the heat is too direct for too long.
