Yow!

That yellowjacket didn't like being trapped between my toe and my sandal while I was walking across my lawn today. I did an odd hiphop dance as I headed for my laundry room to put household ammonia on the sting.

Relief was immediate. My theory is that the alkaline ammonia neutralized the acidic venom.

I'm curious if this theory is correct. Any medical entomologists care to chime in?

Landscapers just pulled four big Yellow Jacket nests from a retaining wall by the pool. My family went the pool for my Father's Day picnic and found that the yellow jackets like the KFC as well as we did. We had to scurry inside. No stings though. Nice to know ammonia works as I was wondering what to do if stung. Anxious to hear the science behind it.

I would have loved to see that dance Walter! That is interesting and good to know that ammonia works for stings. TMW

aspirin, baking soda paste and meat tenderizer paste also work. The venom is protein based so the tenderizer helps break it down. On a similar note one common trick to ease the pain of jelly fish and urchin stings is urine.

I got stung by a hornet last week. I also ran for the laundry room. But, I got the bleach. It works great too. When I have gotten stung and did not have bleach available but did have a smoker around, I have used moistened cigarette tobacco. It will also help stop bleeding, if you have an accidential cut.

Walter, isn't a medical entomologist where you take your pet bugs when they get sick? ;)

I went to GA Tech and still got stung 2 weeks ago. Imagine what would have happened if I went to UGA.

Hey SawHorse, if there are that many bees at Tech, maybe you should head to UGA! LOL
