Concrete front porch help!

Our home is 111 years old.When it was moved from the old farm across the road they added a big ol concrete front porch. It really really needs repainted! its red, or was red,big chips of paint missing. I want to strip it somehow and am afraid of getting chemicals on the plants off the front. Theres a huge wisteria, roses, all kinds of plants. What can I do to get the old paint off without the fear of killing some very old very lovely plants?

You can rent a portable sand blasting machine that should do the trick. It will take some time however to get the paint off. However if the paint is in really good shape, meaning its not chipping or loose. Simply prime and paint over it using a good quality exterior paint suitable for cement surfaces. The paint store will have the products you will need.

good quality means a paint store not walmart they will also give you tons of free advice and the correct the problem,you could sand blast but it is a messy solution it may be all you have to do is sand the edges where it is chipped and repaint good luck your yard sounds wonderful xx

Thank you. It is chipping and peeling so a sandblaster is probably the only way to strip safely. Ill check into getting one I can operate myself.

Walmart is a dirtt word in my home. Home depot is not much better with many of their " experts". I like my local hardware store, they carry most everything , may be a bit more in price but once we figure in fuel for the 20 mile drive to the big box stores, well, local owned is usually the better choice. Thank you, yes the property is beautiful!

If you plan to repaint it the same red or at least the same red for a background color I would simply power wash it to get of the loose paint (tape plastic up to the house first so you don't get paint chips all over the house) and then repaint with the same color in a good exterior porch and floor paint (Lowes has good one in the Valspar line that is reasonably priced). If it was mine, I would dress it up with painted boarders and stencil pattern in the field inside the boarders and then seal coat it with a MasterSeal (old Sonneborne) product.Google painted floors and you will be ohhhed and awwwed.

Dont paint it will only happen again...strip the paint off and do a a concrete overlay or just reseal the plain slab. Paint never lasts on outside concrete.

Moxie is also right on this also. A good quality power washing will do the trick. Just be careful not to destroy the cement using one to powerful. You will need however to let the porch dry for a few days as the water will be absorbed into the cement when using this machine.

I would have to agree with @Concepts in Concrete. There really is no such things as a 'good concrete paint.' Ultimately this will just happen again. If you are able to remove what is there, I would suggest using a concrete stain or dye and then a good exterior concrete sealer. If you can't remove all of the red, an overlay may be a good option, but this type of project isn't typically a DIY type thing, as the products are not readily available at the box stores or even upscale hardware stores. Cheap overlay products aren't any better than paint and will not hold up over time.
