How can I keep snakes away from around the house?

There is 1 area that year after year a snake is always in the same spot which is under the downspout splash. Once we know it's there, we use snake repellant. I don't know what kind it is but it's the color of an earthworm. Oh and by the way I am horribly afraid of snakes.

Here's a couple links that should help you. The first thing you need to do would be to identify the snake species so you'll know what it is that's attracting them to your home. http://www.wikihow.com/Keep-Snakes-Away http://www.hgtvgardens.com/animals-and-wildlife/snakes-alive-how-to-keep-snakes-from-sticking-around On Oahu, Hawaii, they brought in Mongoose to rid the island of snakes. Not sure you want to do that though. LOL

@Faye i'm with you gals!!!! i am deathly afraid too!! my son has snakes for pets...he used to be the president of the ny herp society...if you contact the herp society for your state, they could help you out...oh, just thought of something....i don't know how you feel about getting a dog, but the thai ridgeback will chase away, or kill any snakes that comes in your yard...that's what i would do..if that does't work, there's always the secretary bird....lol..they also kill snakes!!!!! hope i've given you some options to think about....

Be careful! Do you know the old joke about snakes in Georgia? "There are 10,000 different poisonous snakes and 10,001 of them live in Georgia!" (Actually GA has only about 4!)

I love working in the yard and do so without gloves. If an earthworm should so much as touch my hand, it's all over for the day. I know they are beneficial to the soil but I don't like them either. I'd rather have them than to see snakes. I know what you mean about lifting your feet.

There is a commercial product at Home Depot called Snake Away but it is around $25-30 for a one gallon jug of granules. Moth balls are about $5 a box and smell about the same. There is no definitive evidence that moth balls do the trick but it works for some people. The thought is that the moth balls actually repel the rats and mice (they are very sensitive to strong chemicals) so without the food supply, the snakes move away. But here's a thought: unless they are poisonous snakes, while they can alarm you when you see them, they are very beneficial in that they eat rats and other rodents that might otherwise get into your house. Same with killing ALL spiders. I hate spiders but they eat roaches so the ones outside can stay. Good luck :)

If you want a great item, go to Home Depot or online stores. Get a bag of SNAKE AWAY. My hubby used to get his little hand crank machine and go along the property perimeter (I think 1xyear) on the side where the neighbor had a creek and induced snakes arrival but this stuff is the greatest. About $25.00 a bag and it should last quite awhile -- all according to how much you have to use each time. Hope this takes care of those buggers for you! ec

@Esther Carr @Leslie Long , we use snake away, it stinks to high heaven. I didn't know if there was something else that didn't smell so bad. Snake Away it is.

I live in Tennessee on the Duck River. We had cotton mouth snakes down under rocks on the river bank. Was told to put out moth balls. I threw them under the rocks and all around our fence. Haven't see hide nor hair of any since. It works but you need to put them out several times a year as they dissolve in the rain. Good luck.

Thank you @Janice W , I'll try that as well.

I am so surprised that it smells. I sold my home and had several bags that I've given to my new neighbors - they haven't complained. I can perhaps understand why you have the smell - just maybe don't spread it near the downspout but rather the outer perimeter of your property. The snake has to come from somewhere to get into your property. Hope this makes sense.

snake away does stink i think it is ground mothballs that is what it smells like AND it cost a heck of a lot more than moth balls. When i was a child the oletimers like to sit out and talk with the neighbors. I remember they would burn old rags with old shoes and sulfur to keep snakes away even an old burnt tire they said would run them off. dhall
