Gardening Pest Control

I don't mean to be a crybaby (after my yellowjacket sting) but I now have a chigger bite!

(some say amputation helps alleviate the itch -- for a while). Chiggers live on tall grass and low shrubbery limbs, so that's the place to spray insecticide. And, opposite to everything you've always heard, they drop off after feeding, so applying nail polish to the bite is ineffective. I apply very hot water and that seems to make the itch go away.

That looks like it hurts! I am from Minnesota, and every couple years, we would get chigger bites from being in the tall grass on the lakeshores. We tried the nail polish, it never worked and now I know why! We did have luck with toothache medicine (I think its Anbesol?) put that on the bite and the feeling, well, all feeling goes away!

Walter, I found chigarid (sp?) worked and was great for fire ant bites too.

    Hi Walter,

I like to use Campho-Phenique it's a bit old school. It works well. I keep it in the first aid kit.

Yikes. You're making me afraid of my garden. It's a dangerous place.

So which insect are you planning to run into this weekend? I stepped in a pile of fire ants that other night and did the "fire ant dance" to shake them off before getting bit. I was lucky- no bites.

Awe, you city slickers just need the 4 foot copperhead that my husband killed yesterday to eat the bugs! Unfortunately I think their menu includes humans.

Old Fashion Remedy for insect bites - Use regular strength Listerine (the gold liquid). The original one. Take a cotton ball, pour some Listerine on it and rub it on skin. Takes the itch away immediately. If you don't like to smell like mouthwash -- another wonderful product (you can purchase it at any pharmacy (Rite Aid carries it) it is called "After Bite". Looks like a marker and you shake it and apply to the sting/'bite. I discovered this wonderful product when I got stung by a ...»
bee. It immediately takes the itch and burning away. Great product.

I don't remember what remedy we used, but when our son was about 8 yoa I took a group of boys from our church to a group campout. After swimming he took a shower and them went back down the road and retrieved the clean underware he had dropped. He put them on and, yes they were full of chiggers. He had several miserable days.

Did you try vinegar? That works on a lot of bites and stings. It neutralizes the poison on some bites. I have been using that for years after I found out that it was a cure for certain types of jelly fish stings. It works most of the time. Hope you get better and watch out for those pesky chiggers.

Deborah - good to know about Listerine and After Bite! For chiggers, we always painted them with clear nail polish...and it always worked :)

Cutting an onion in half and placing on a bee sting will keep the swelling down.

Also another remedy for a bee sting is to cut a potato and place the cut potato on bee sting for about 5 min with pressure. Don't know why it works, only know my grandparents used this remedy all the time for bee stings.
