Love the Look of the Barberry Hedge, but Scared to Prune Them?

I'm not sure what the situation is in Maryland, but Japanese barberry is an invasive threat in many areas, and the Plant Conservation Alliance's Alien Plant Working Group comes right out and says, "Do not plant Japanese barberry." http://www.nps.gov/plants/alien/fact/beth1.htm
