A Little Black Paint and a Cedar Chest

This unique cedar chest needed to be refinished as the top was worn down to the bare wood in spots. It had lots of great detailing but you just didn't notice them in all that dark wood. It had a fake finish on it and was time for a new look! I absolutely love the look of black with lots of warm wood tones peeking through. All it needed was a little black paint.
Before
I sanded the top down, carefully, as it is a piece of veneer and stained it with Java Gel from General Finishes. This gel is easy to use. I used a brush to apply it and then wiped off with heavy duty paper towels. You can apply a second coat after the first coat dries, but I find it doesn't really need it. Then I gave it 3 coats of a water based poly.
I used All Surface Enamel in stock black (low lustre) from Sherwin Williams. I love this paint! Goes on smooth and dries quickly.
After. It really is an eye catching piece!
