Painting kitchen floor

In a previous post I asked about updating my outdated kitchen. I have gotten everything done except for the floor. I can't afford to have it torn out and put new flooring in, so I have decided to paint it instead. Here's my dilema...I don't know what color to paint it. My kitchen is earth tones. The walls are a peanut butter color, the counters are painted dark brown and cream faux granite, the cabinets are a light oak color and the ceiling is an off white. The trim and doors are dark chocolate mahogony. Right now my floors are a 70's style orange and yellow flower pattern (YUCK). Would you go with a dark floor color or a lighter color? I know it sounds like a whole bunch of browns but it all works well and is appealing to the eye except for the darn floor that looks like vomit.

I'm also painting my kitchen floor. I'm going with a lighter color because I'm afraid a darker one will darken the whole kitchen. Just something to consider.

Kendra, photos of your kitchen as it is now would really help. Though you described it very well, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

A medium-dark floor will "anchor" your kitchen and keep the eye at a higher level. Use a mid-shade, not to dark...
