What about a large map adhered to a large piece of metal - then use magnets for all the places you've visited - may color code the magnets for places you've been, and places you want to go!

You could cut some of the plain wood pieces into shapes of states you have visited. Another idea I want to try is string art. You could take a square piece of wood, hammer nails into the shape of the state (use tracing paper for a stencil) and then run the string from the center to all the points. There's some examples on Pinterest. As for driftwood, you could hot glue souvenirs to the smaller pieces of driftwood and either display them on a table or hang them on the walls.

I like the map idea but I would decoupage it to wood, You could always use upholster tacks to mark where you've been. Maybe attach the wood to fence posts and add finials on top.

More details of what you are thinking would help. Do you want the headboard to represent the US as a whole or the states you have visited or maybe lived in? What about the military? Do you want that represented? Anything in history in particular you'd like to be part of the headboard? Do you want to paint the wood? Please tell us any ideas that you've had rolling around in your head so we can help you expand on those ideas.

If you have brochures, cut out interesting scenes and mod podge onto the headboard. Use decals, cutouts from travel magazines in case you forgot a brochure, something showing what you did, pics of you river rafting, ziplining, canoeing or kayaking, restaurant menus. Do a mock setup on top of the headboard. When you get what you want, Mod Podge the entire setup onto headboard. Cover with a polyurethane coating that wont yellow. Good luck. Would like to see pics when you start the process.

Wallpaper room with maps. Buy several globes and build cages of driftwood around them and hang them around the room at different heights. Nail old license plates to your door. Use 'astroturf' as a carpet, gives you the feel of travelling to golf courses all over the world. Make lamps out of the headlights of cars. Cars = Travel. Use old mini-van seats as chairs for your room. Buy some furniture from a hotel/motel that is renovating. Paint stars on your ceiling to make it feel like you went travelling somewhere to go camping. Use RailRoad ties for the base of your bed. Use a sailboat sail as your sheets. Frame pictures of the Space Shuttle and put them all around the room. Put in a old sound system that is reminiscent of old airport terminals of the 1940's Enjoy !
