Do I need to sand varnish before painting ?

I have just put recycled dental trim on a fireplace mantel. I'd like to paint one board. Do I need to sand prior to painting ? It looks like maybe it has some sort of original polyurethane on it.

Yes, it should be sanded first because the paint may not stick to the polyurethane. Hope this helps!

Roughing up the polyurethane will help the paint stick better. You will get a much nicer finish if you sand thoroughly. But, if you are looking for a "vintage" or "grungy" look, then sanding might not be necessary.

Absolutely! And prime the furniture before you paint. Sand lightly after primer and between coats of paint for a truly professional finish!

By all means you need to sand, or the paint will not stick, I have dental molding on my kitchen cabinets and I love it.
