I have 1982 formica kitchen cabinets & I can't afford new ones. I'd like to paint them but don't know if it's possible...does anyone know the way to do it so that the paint will adhere?

Hi Maggie ' There are some great paints on the market now to enable you to paint on any surface' Super easy . I did mine and they turned out great.( Some new cabinet handles to complete the new look ) ...Your local paint store should be able to help you out there with all you need to do them.I will post a pic have a good day :)

yes! sand the laminate (Formica is a brand name for laminate) until the surface is scratched up, primer will adhere better, I primed with Kills, 2 coats smooth 3" roller, then 2 coats of your final paint with same type of roller, in satin enamel, lightly sand between coats
  • I've painted mine before and used a shellac-based primer before painting. The paint adhered perfectly with no lifting or scratching. The only thing I didn't like was the texture that the foam roller left behind. There is a product by Rust-Oleum - Countertop Transformations - that I hear works really well! Hope this helps!

Yes you can,,,the trick is the primer and to rough it up with a bit of sanding prior.... i did it years ago can't remember what i used,,but i'm sure there are much newer items on the market..

Yup. Lightly sand, Zinnser primer x 2 coats, paint x 2 coats (reg laytex wall paint) then min 3 coats or poly sealer (the kind they use for wood floors high traffic in crystal clear)

Rustoleum has a great kit called cabinet transformations you can go dark to light or light to dark. They have numerous colors to choose from and it includes the glaze.
