Stain bleeding through paint

Mary Insana
by Mary Insana
I am doing a dresser for a client and ran into a problem. I sanded a little then proceeded to put in white chalk paint. As it dried I saw that there was pink coming through. I dad some water based primer and put two coats of that over the pink areas. After 2 coats of primer you can still see the pink coming through. Do you think a different primer is needed , a water base vs the non water based primer
Thanks
Mary

Gloria is right. You have to Shellac the piece. I learned this the hard way myself! Whenever I get a 1930-40's Mahogany piece I automatically shellac it before painting it.

Thanks, I did a coat of shellac but found out, the had way too, that I needed 2 coats. The red bled through 1 coat of shellac.
