Novice Gardening Tips

I'm not sure if it's the warmer weather or that I'm becoming more confident in my old age, but I have been excited to get my hands dirty.
Anyone who knows me, know that I hate dirt. When my mother used to garden, I would laugh at her. There on her knees with dirt beneath her nails, wiping the sweat from her brow. And I was amazed that she somehow found joy down there. In all that dirt.
Now I'm finding that same joy. I guess I could compare it to having a baby. Without the pain. You plant a seed and watch it grow. It's quite beautiful.
I took a clipping of my dumb cane plant and rooted it in a jar of water for a month. I just planted it. I hope it thrives.
Yesterday, the sun was shining and it was a perfect day to plant. I finally got around to planting those indoor plants that I had bought over a month ago.
One thing I've learned is that houseplants thrive with a good fertilizer once a month (or when it's actively growing)
Another tip I've learned is to use the information of the tags that come with the plant. Totally helpful!
Here is a picture of my dumb cane clipping at two weeks and again at 3-4 weeks.

I go through periods where I enjoy it and when I don't. I never gave gardening a thought as a youngster but at the end of my first year in college, instead of going back home I elected to stay in Houston and a friend gave me a plant another dorm resident was discarding. It was in sad shape and it started to thrive with a little attention. Suddenly I became interested in plants and before long had about 60 different ones in my apartment. The Hyponex Handbook of House Plants was my favorite book. But as circumstances/life changed, so did my interest. Its cresting this year because my daughter is into it. Well, at 2.5, she's really more interested in rearranging mulch but its a joy to be sharing the gardening with her and wtching her delight with evety trip to the nursery.

Gardening is my therapy... no more psychiatrist bills!

@Lynn5280 , I agree. It's also my stress management. When stressed or in doubt about something serious I go and weed. Dandelions don't have a chance, my little gardens look better and I some how find the answer that I was looking for.
