Classy Rustic Dresser

I bought this dresser at an estate sale and paid more than I usually do. I could tell it was a quality antique, but the varnish had gone bad and create a weird ripply texture. I knew I wanted to strip down the top and restain it, and strip down the drawers and leave as much of that wonderful wood as I could. I love the 2 tones the drawers have, which are actually different woods, and the raised detail. I will admit now that I kept this beauty for myself and it is now in my entryway. I just love this piece too much and knew I would regret selling it. So this baby is ALL MINE!
Here it is finished.
Before
Hope you can see how textured the varnish has become.
Here I have already stripped down the top which is Mahogany, and painted the body Old White by Annie Sloan
The drawers were very hard to strip down, especially because of the raised woodwork. I took a small artist brush to paint the detail.
Now it is time for clear wax.
It is so hard to get good enough lighting so you can really see how beautiful the wood turned out, but trust me it is wonderful in person. If someday I get tired of the painted wood I can strip the whole thing down and restore it to it's original. paint does not have to be forever. I agree, it was a thing of beauty before and I would have left it all wood but what she did to it looks nice and so that is what I address. Saying I would never paint wood is not the same as saying -it would look nice without casters too..

Actually Lauri, if it were mine it would still be a ruined ugly piece of furniture because I would never have done anything to it, so I applaud you for giving it fresh life in whatever skin!
