Any pics? My only caution is one you paint it, you can't go back. Brick is a porous material the water and moisture can work it's way through the capillaries. If you seal it up with paint and there are any water issues that used to move through...you may get paint coming off in the future. A brick supply shop can show you different stains that are made for brick that you can use to change the color of your brick without actually sealing the brick. Hope that helps.
  • Painted brick can really update your home---however, if the prepping, cleaning, and painting are not top notch then you are left with a peeling mess as the seasons change. A picture would help but without a picture I would like to suggest that you first think about painting the trim and shutters and front door before plunging into painting the brick. finding bright complimentary color for the trim and doors could really update your home for less. Even changing the landscaping and light fixtures will make a big impact. Hope this helps and gets you thinking...good luck and you could post a pic so we can see what color the brick is and give you more specific advice.

Brick styles do date a house, but then so does house styles, roof lines, location, etc. I too want to paint my brick, but am getting a lot of family opposition! I think I would go for staining over painting...because of the reasons listed above! I actually love painted brick but am afraid I will wind up with trouble and more work in the future!

Have you seen on this site as well as Pinterest how they water down latex white or cream color paint ( 1 part exterior latex house paint to 3 parts water) and using a wagner home decor size sprayer ($89.00) they spray it lightly on the exterior brick to lighten the brick color. It's very pretty and softens the brick a bit. I've seen it sponged on instead of spraying also. If it turns out to be to light, you'll be able to water down a color close to the original and redo it without sealing the brick. Best part is that they say you won't have any moisture problems like you would using the solid paint.

There's also something called a German wash or something like that. Good luck.
