Herringbone Pattern Wall Art Using Wood Shims

I've been eying the wood shims in the lumber department lately and have been loving herringbone pattern for forever now. As luck would have it, I needed some big wall art and thought the shims lent themselves perfectly to create a herringbone pattern. The cost of this art was around $6! Not bad :)

I decided to stain a few of the shims just to add a little more interest.

The frame is just a 1x3, or you can use some molding for a less rustic feel.

For the herringbone pattern, how did you resolve the different thicknesses in each shim? Since they go from thick to thin, did you just put them in randomly, or did all the thick ends get placed consistently in the same place, ie, all the thick ends at the lowest point, pointing the thin ends up to the top of the frame?
