How do you remove the fabric softener residue from inside the agitator filling reservoir?

Mine is removable. If you look closely at the "cup" you may be able to see where it comes apart. I just have to tug on it a little bit and it comes off. I rinse it out with hot water and scrub the little openings with a brush. It also allows for pouring hot water into the area that the cup covers. Also, I noticed when I use vinegar as a fabric softener (like when washing towels) it seems to remove the residue that way.

I have actually switched to using vinegar all the time as a fabric softener. Works great and no build up.

It does come apart, but vinegar leaves no residue

vinegar would be a good double duty for you, it is a great inexpensive way to soften your clothes AND it helps to keep your washer cleaner. IF you are afraid of everything smelling like vinegar, don't, but you can use a stronger scented laundry soap (provided you and your family doesn't have sensitive skin)

As everyone states, the agitator cups pulls or twists off. Every so often I run mine through the dishwasher with other misc things I want cleaned. That is the easiest and least messy way to clean many things. Good luck

Vinegar - definitely! You can actually use vinegar mixed with some baking soda dissolved in hot water (google for recipe and instructions because it foams A LOT!) as a fabric softener - and it really does work. The baking soda cancels out the vinegar smell so your clothes and stuff won't smell like an Italian salad!
