Should I Put Wood Floors in My Master Bath??

Johnnie L
by Johnnie L
We are moving to our forever home in 3 weeks. The space is amazing, but needs major updating. I am aiming for a vintage farmhouse style. I am a junker and a reclaimed wood addict. The master bath has forrest green tile flooring that is never gonna cut it for me. (We will talk about those outdated honey oak cabinets and the lighting/ brass fixtures later). I want the look of wood flooring. What are my options? I am huge into doing everything on the cheap and eco-friendly whenever possible, but I am open!

I would go with tile. They now have it in a wood grain that looks just like wood. It is elongated and more narrow. Best of both worlds! BTW, we just pulled up jewel tone green vinyl....lol. Tile is so amazing and you can really abuse it!

Yes, that's what I did in a white wash for the bathroom. Did a driftwood in the kitchen and laundry room. Looks just like wood. Love it!

Don't do wood. The moisture will eventually warp it. Good advice from Melissa. I would tile anytime.

My opinion... use tile because of the possibility of water damage to wood.

Congrats on the new home! How exciting! I would steer clear of wood and definitely no laminate. Since I don't like the cold, hardness of tile on the floor (and I hate grout), I wanted a wood-look alternative and decided on Trafficmaster Allure vinyl planks (sold at Home Depot) after I read about it on "The Lettered Cottage" blog. I have it in one bathroom and love it so much that I cannot wait until the day I can have all the laminate in my house ripped out and replaced with Allure. Allure looks like wood (with lots of colors to chose from) but it's water resistant, easy to care for, soft under foot, quiet to walk on, durable and very inexpensive. Trafficmaster also has a waterproof version of Allure called Allure "Ultra." It is rated for commercial use as well as residential and it is scratch resistant. There is a lifetime residential warranty on it (10 years-commercial). It has gotten better than average reviews on the Home Depot website. There have been some complaints of seams separating or corners popping up on the regular Allure but from what I have read, following the installation instructions to the letter is key if you are doing a DIY install. It seems the instances where the seams separate or corners pop up is primarily due to faulty installation (dust or dirt getting on the glue edge causing the edges to not stick well or the seams not being rolled or pressed together well etc.) I have had absolutely ZERO problems with the regular water resistant (not the waterproof Ultra) Allure I had installed in my bathroomover 3 years ago. I've even started using a steam mop on it.

Put in tile and since you plan on this being your forever home, install heat underneath! This is one area that you need to install the heat since it is not a "comeback and add later" like you can with things like fancy moldings! Or just have a warm fuzzy rug to step onto when you get out of the tub!

They also make a beautiful tile that looks like wood. My sister just ordered it for her home. It's a bit costly but if you're planning on being there forever it is well worth the investment! I had hardwood in one of my bathrooms and it was sealed very well but it still ended up getting warped! We ripped it up and put tumbled marble down.

Engineered wood will be fine, but real wood can be an issues in a bathroom. How about the new tile that looks like wood?
  • Dolly Smith Dolly Smith on Apr 20, 2014
I would look for tile that looks like wood, especially if you have your heart set on wood. I have read that you can use bamboo flooring in a bath, but I would investigate about it really well before proceeding.
  • Bethaknee Blake Bethaknee Blake on Apr 20, 2014
You can use wood, just take a few extra steps. Fill in the cracks with wood putty and seal with extra coats of polyurethane. You may have to refinish every now and then, but I think it would go well with the farmhouse look considering most older farmhouses had wood floors. Consider a very light colored stain :)

i have the tile that looks like wood planks. Even feels like the roughness of wood. I have it in the entry of the back door, kitchen, through the hall way and in the hall bath. I do not recommend using a steam mop my edges came loose on some when I did this. Nice thing is with these you just pull up the damaged plank and lay down a new one. We love it have had them in our house for 5 years.
  • Terri M Terri M on Apr 20, 2014
I too would avoid actual wood. There are so many choices out there for you! I am planning on using the vinyl planks in my basement work area, it really does look amazing. My friend put it in her kitchen and unless you get on the floor and touch it, you don't know it is vinyl! I have used a parquet vinyl tile in my laundry room that looks pretty darn good too. Another option would be Bamboo, however that is costly. If you are planning on replacing the cabinets, I would imagine you want to keep the cost of the flooring down.
  • The206120 The206120 on Apr 20, 2014
Bamboo is impervious to water. We actually purchased a sample and submerged it in water before we put it in our bathroom.

I have had hardwood in my half bath for almost 2 years. Have not had a problem with it at all. However if you are reluctant you need to go out and look. There are amazing options out there, including flooring that looks like wood.
  • Ri-Lee Ri-Lee on Apr 20, 2014
Never put wood floors in a bath. It will ruin after time. You can't help from getting water on it. Doesn't matter, if it is real wood or laminate, they will not hold up. Use stone and have heat put under them.
  • Reta Lane Reta Lane on Apr 20, 2014
You should never put in flooring where there is water and moisture. I made that mistake in my kitchen and when my pipe underneath my sink dripped out, water got on my floor and warped the wood. Lots of good ideas on here for using an alternative. Also, even laminated wood warps. I had that happen to me too.
  • Joanna Nelson Joanna Nelson on Apr 20, 2014
Ever thought of cork flooring? Soft under foot and it's brown like wood flooring. Or tile that looks like wood. I'd be afraid that if there was an overflow of water from the bathtub, that the wood flooring would curl up and then you'd stub your toe! ouch!
  • Kim Zeigler Kim Zeigler on Apr 20, 2014
I would steer away from a real wood floor. Even with filling and extra urethane you will have problems with it being slick and still possibly warping. My son has the manufactured wood and it still warped. If you don't like the look of ceramic tile, how about slate?
  • Terri Schanken Terri Schanken on Apr 20, 2014
Tile, no wood. Take it from one who experienced a water leak. I wish we had used ceramic.

We have real wood flooring in our bathroom and kitchen.. After 15 years it still looks great and we have had no problems. We do plan on refinishing the kitchen area due to wear but it still looks good.
    • John John on Apr 20, 2014
@Martha Burrell We have inlaid wood floors in our kitchen for the past 30+ years. We have had it sanded and stained three times. It holds up, just don't let the water stand on the floor, and use a commercial grade polyurethane coating on it. The last time I did it was a couple of weeks ago, and the floor guy used restaurant grade sealer. Never any issues.

The main living areas we finished in the usual manner and have refinished them twice since we moved in.

i had hardwood in my kitchen and throughout the whole house..I would not recommend .. get the tile that looks like wood.. we had a leak from the hose to the refrigerator ice maker and it was over 9000 dollars to fix the floor when he boards warped tear it up and then refinish the whole floor so the repair job matched only to have it happened again 2 years later when the dishwasher blew a hose... I can not tell you enough that I would never again put hard wood where there is water.

We're planning to install faux wood porcelain tiles in the kitchen of our 160 yr-old house. It's not terribly expensive, comes in 2-3' long "planks" & several wood tones. Lowe's carries a nice looking style that is under $3 sf, & there are several online sources.

If you put wood in, you will be miserable. Some people, depending upon climate have good luck with it. You can put in teak, that would work well, but other than that, I'd go with the wood look tile. Frankly, depending upon what you are going to do with the cabinetry, wood will be too much. If you are going to paint the cabinets white, go with wood look tile. Otherwise, I wold do terra cotta. I did terra cotta in my guest bath and wish I had done it in my master bath as well. I love it. Reminds me of Italy and the farmhouses we rent in the Tuscan countryside.
  • Joy S Joy S on Apr 20, 2014
Tile that looks like wood. Wouldn't want wood in a moisture ridden area. We have wood in our hallway outside of the bathroom and there is already moisture damage on our wood floor. Tile is best in the bathroom.
  • Mary DeWolfe Mary DeWolfe on Apr 20, 2014
Our house was 102 years old when we bought it and was in very poor condition, having been a rental for about 30 years. We removed all the awful carpet & lino and discovered hardwood downstairs, which we refinished. It has stood up great, even in the kitchen. Upstairs we discovered wide board floors, which we painstakingly caulked (every joint - what a job!) and painted - even in the bathroom. As I painted them white, I have redone them once and will probably do them again in another year or so... But they look great! I should add that we bought our house in early 2008.

I have been exploring options for my old farmhouse flooring in the kitchen, mud room, laundry, bathroom and dining room...I really wanted something easy care and that would stand up to heavy moisture and dog urine...the dogs are housebroken, however, accidents do happen...I discovered a wood-looking, totally vinyl flooring. I was told it would be great for my use. It comes in plank lengths, just like the floating hardwood flooring. It was not too expensive...it locks together and is floating (I thought since it was lock together/floating, if moisture got too bad, I could probably take it up to dry out underneath....I am trying it out in a small bathroom in the bottom of my unheated bank barn. I will probably go ahead and get the same thing for inside the house. There was not a big selection of patterns/colors, but I found what I wanted. Got it at Home Emporium.

  • Mary Mary on Apr 20, 2014
I would not put a wood floor in my bathroom. Im sure it would look amazing! But, especially if you have kids, its going to start to swell if it gets wet repeatedly. And the moisture in the air will do it, too. I learned from experience that the floating floor is not a good idea, in the bathroom. It starts to swell in the cracks, where it locks together. It has been about 2 years, but it needs to be replaced. This time Im going to try something different. I dont know what yet.

I have laminate floors that look like distressed hickory. It's been 2 years and it still looks fabulous. No problem from steam or dampness. My only advice would be to use a much lighter color than I did. I really wish I had used something that looked pickled or white washed, for a more weathered look.

I completely agree with @Carrol Burchett. Leave the floor and paint the cabinets, frame the mirror. There is a great product for cabinets that I'm using right now on an old veneer nightstand called Rustoleum Transformations, it works great for painting cabinets, veneer, etc. I'm doing mine in an espresso color and the wood grain is still showing through, and turning out gorgeous! The best part is, no sanding required!!!

Wood works very well in a bathroom, as long as you choose the right product. It gives a beautiful farmhouse feel. I would, however lose that dated tub in a red hot minute, paint the vanity and frame out the mirror. Add some vintage lighting and you'll have the a great bathroom.

We have wood floors in our master bath in our 100+ yr old farmhouse. They look amazing! However we did have an overflow and it was a mess! We had to use a fan and concrete blocks (to prevent warping) for 4 days to get it completely dry. The floors are now sealed with several coats of urethane. You just have to be very careful about water on wood. But again wood is perfect for old houses!

If you are a serious DIY person you can paint tile. It's not easy but you can save a ton of money. I have done tub surrounds and exterior monuments. Search "paint ceramic tile" and there is a lot on info. Sanding the shiny tiles to give it tooth is the first step. Then the painting process (many ideas online), then the sealing. I recommend Aqua products. C-500 in a marine grade water based sealer but you need to use AquaGaurd first. http://www.fauxstore.com/A-AquaTopcoats.aspx

  • Cheryl Cheryl on Apr 21, 2014
At one point, I used pine planks in my bathroom. I wanted a very rustic look, so I used regular boards, ship-lapped them and then beat them up (I'm very aggressive), stained them, and put multiple coats of matte-finished polyurethane on the planks before installing them. If you go this route, don't forget to paint the sides of the boards black to give them an old appearance, so that when you look at the planks, they appear to have accumulated years of use. I had three kids at the time, and the floor held up great for the five years we lived in the house after the project was completed. I agree with you that there's nothing like wood, and I now live in a small apartment, where I am contemplating removing the stained 45 year old linoleum and putting down some of the new laminate flooring that looks like wood. Luckily, the room is small enough that it shouldn't cost me more than 70 or 80 dollars for the materials. So in answer to your question about whether you should put wood floors in your master bath, my answer is a resounding "Yes!"

I have wide plank pine throughout my house which everyone remarks about. It looks fabulous and I love that it's unique to my area. On the flip side, I HATE the wood in my bathroom!!! It's just too much to maintain, condensation or any other water is a major issue. Since we didn't build the house we didn't make the choice. We lived with it to see what we were getting ourselves into and I think it's a major mistake.

Cedar for sure or teak works well in moist rooms.

The most on the cheap and Eco- friendly is to use what you have! Redo around it and challenge your self to make it work! Paint the cabinets, add towels, mirror, etc. to work with the floor as it is. Stain the grout..... Get a big rug to cover a wide area of it if it is too much of the green. Destroying it but talking Eco friendly and green..... Is not very "green" . Tile can be painted, too.

We just redid our entire house in tile planks that look like wood... its beautiful. Everyone that has seen it thinks its wood. So easy to keep clean.

NO, NO, NO,,,,,,,,,IF ITS REAL WOOD.... Vinyl look alike, or tiles are fine....ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE LITTLE ONES, and some bigger ones ... several reasons..the upkeep in tht area, the moisture and lastly,,BOYS (some big ones too) are NOT the most TIDY..when itcomes to the potty issue..... IF the floor gets wet, repeatedly over a long period, a bit hits the wrong area , it could spell trouble..

May I add one more NO! We bought a new house that had carpet in the bathroom. Another mistake. Go with whatever can take a lot of water so you don't have to worry about it.

I have had 3/4 inch hardwood in my bathroom for 22 years, it's still beautiful!

Wood floors are beautiful - especially if you want a country or rustic look, but they don't hold up well to a lot of moisture (i.e. bathrooms, kitchens) and they take a lot of maintenance so I would suggest a wood-look porcelain tile. They come in various 'wood' colors and patterns found in most home improvement stores or online. It may cost a bit up front but will last as long as the house does so it may be worth the investment. It sounds like you may be a DIYer and that would save a lot of $ right there. As far as those honey oak finish cabinets, add decorative wood trim to add character, choose a new color with chalk paint, change the hardware, and add a new faucets and maybe the sinks. A nice clawfoot tub would be great for a farmhouse look. http://www.houzz.com/photos/3586859/Renovatio...

I just installed the vinyl plank flooring in master bath. Love it, and it's meant for wet areas like bathrooms, basements and laundry rooms. Check it out

    NO! Not a good idea!

  • Mogie Mogie on Dec 07, 2022

Recently they have come out with water proof hard wood.

  • I would use vinyl plank flooring. you can have the look of wood without worrying about water damaging the real wood floor.

  • Johnavallance82 Johnavallance82 on Apr 16, 2023

No not wood! You could use Wood look Tiles though or Cork if you want it warmer under foot!

  • Personally, I would not. Water and wood are not the best combination.

  • Mogie Mogie on Aug 06, 2023

Wood and water not a good combo. Sooner or later there will be moisture problems. Almost as odd as putting carpet in a bathroom.

LVP is available in a waterproof option. We use them in the bathrooms of our rentals and have not had a problem at all. Congrats on the new house!

  • You can buy tiles that look like wood. That's what I would do!

  • Dee Dee on Feb 24, 2024

I would never put wood in the bathroom. It is under constand heat and water pressure. I would buy the tiles that look like wood and install t hem. My friend had her tub overflow and ruined her flooring.
