Normal white subway tile or broken tile back splash?

I have been redoing my kitchen. I'm ready to install the white subway tile back splash which has been the plan all along. I now have Kendall grey lower cabinets, white appliances and white upper cabinets. I have laminate wood floors. I selected the white tile back splash because it would be clean and simple but now I have started to wonder if I will bore of it quickly. I have seem some amazing mosaic back splashes made from broken tiles or dishes that are amazing. I started thinking I could do a subway tile boarder and the infill with broken and cut tile in a overall swooping pattern of sorts across the back splash in all white that would not overhwelm but be texture that is really cool. Thoughts? Is this a I will love it but others will think OMG. The rest of my home is very artsy.

Never should you put laminate in a kitchen, bathroom , or laundry room ...You're screwed if there is ever a flood ...

@Terry's Flooring I have had a flooded floor before and it does not matter what is in there, you are screwed. I have never understood why utility areas in homes don't have drains in the floors!

I vote for subway tile. The mosaic of broken tile is a fad and will soon become dated while subway tile is timeless.

Keep in mind that white subway tile has been in style and manufactured since the first day it was introduced...so not only is it "hot" now, it will always be in style. Cracked, colored, designer tiles will be old hat in 3-5 years. Go with the subway. Any color you sit in front of it from clear to cream to red will be stunning!

Do whatever your heart and head are telling you in the end you will be happier with your decision. You said your home is artsy, I have the feeling you would be much happier with the textured all white backsplash. And if you do it I would love to see pictures post back here please.

Thanks everybody! In the end I decided I should try a smaller broken tile mosaic before I dive head first into an entire back splash. I put up the subway tile this weekend and it turned out amazing. I still have to grout yet and finish painting my upper cabinets (moved them around), trim, shelves....then I will post pic. It is sweet and as always my Hometalk friends never steer me wrong. I'll have to say as well as worn out as I am from just tiling two walls; I can just image how long the broken tile mosaic would take me...f o r e v e r!! The subway tile looks so clean and has a wonderful presence. Looks fab with my solid surface white tops to. Ekk been at this 4 months so perhaps another 2 and my kitchen will be uber sweet! lol Thanks again all.

@Moxie If, in the future you tire of the plain white you can always find a mosaic pattern you can affix randomly to your tiles. Then, when that gets to be old hat, remove be temporary mosaic and enjoy the beauty subway tiles again. Good luck with finishing your kitchen and remember to eat your Wheaties for strength.
