Question about DIY outdoor artwork for porch

I want to do some type of painting on a canvas to hang outdoors. It will be under a roof, so it is somewhat protected from the elements. Will this work if I use some type of protective coating on the finished product? Thanks.

Years ago my husband was contracted to paint designs on tipis (yes, you heard that correctly). We used a marine grade poly. These were pitched along a river--a canoe camp--and really exposed to the elements. Lasted for many years.

Depending on size of 'canvas' for your artwork, buy exterior house paint in colors you want, small quart sizes the smallest size I have used. It will last for years IF you make sure to cover ALL of your 'canvas' (material you use...plywood, canvas, etc...). You can choose to seal it, if you feel the need, don't usually have to with this kind of paint. Otherwise, if you choose oils, acrylics...you should seal.

What about outdoor craft paint? Forgot the brand, but it was a well known name.

Just know that sometimes outdoor varnish/poly yellowes over time.

At our art gallery we have painted on outside buildings, windows and concrete with artist tube acrylic paint. We use Liquitex acrylic varnish on it when dry. We also hang painted canvases on our front porch and they survive well.

A fun idea would be to get a large or xtra large painters canvas laid out on a table or picnic table with artist acrylics and different sized paint brushes. Invite friends and family over for an outdoor BBQ or picnic and have everyone paint their favorite flowers on the canvas and voilà... You will have your piece of artwork. It's fun for everyone and very memorable!!!
