You might want to try a product from Home Depot called "rubber mulch". It comes in 4.5" strips , 10 ft. long and 24" wide strips 6 ft. long. It has a 12 year guarantee. It allows water through and is held down with clips ( I am going to get some of the strips to use as edgers and hold them down with long nails).

If you can get the weeds out, then pour Baking Soda all over the rocks and what ground you see. You can either wet it down afterwards, or wait on the rain. I use baking soda on ever thing and it works great. You can also pour straight vinegar over the rocks, it will kill grass or weeds. Works great. Good luck.

Yes, I was going to suggest Vinegar also...Not to expensive and does kill weeds, but NOT flowers....I have not poured it directly on flowers, but I have used it around flowers and it did not kill them. Good Luck, I can sure relate about the "back pain" issue too <3

@Pam Guenther Vinegar is non-selective. It will kill whatever type of plant it is poured on.

Id put old shingles down, then cover them with the rocks. Works great. And lasts longer than anything else.

Quick and easy... 1 gallon of vinegar and 1 container of regular cheap salt, mix well and apply in a spray bottle... works better in full sun light....obviously when it's not raining and weeds and grass will be dead the next day. :)
  • Weed block fabric works well, but you have to get a commercial grade product. The stuff you normally purchase at the box stores tends to be thinner and fails in short order. If your using gravel as the ground cover, place newspapers down first then cover with weed block followed by stone. You need enough stone to completely cover the ground cover or the sunlight will degrade it in short order.

I have had great luck with multiple layers of newspaper. Lay and overlap 2 or 3 layers of newspaper (ads too!). Sprinkle lightly with the hose to keep it from blowing away. When you have an area covered completely, place your bigger rocks in a pleasing way and then mulch all the rest of the area. Lasts for at least 2 years and water will drain through it.
