Art Deco Painted Floor Screen

I've always loved floor screens and when I saw this at the thrift store I couldn't believe my luck - it was only $10! I'm sure marked so low because of a tear in the front panel which I thought I could easily fix.
In the meantime, I just turned the screen around to the backside and waited for inspiration to strike.
The great thing about floor screens is there are two sides.
So I just turned the screen around to the backside and waited for inspiration to strike.
I had some wonderful metallic paint to try out. Metallics + floor screen meant Art Deco to me.

To achieve a geometric pattern, I simply used painter's tape to create lines and shapes, then painted over the top.
After removing the first layer of tape, I retaped and painted the lines and boxes and beautiful bronze which works back to the wood tones I have in this room.
To create a little interest, I drew some graphic flowers in the center of the side panels and a dragonfly in the center panel.

Drawing with chalk works well as it's easily removable with a wet cloth.
I introduced turquoise in the side panels and wanted to bring that color into the screen in a larger way. Using a thinner tape, I marked off a smaller rectangle.
Then placed painter's tape around those rectangles, removed the orange tape, and painted in with turquoise.
The flowers and dragonfly each received a light glaze of silver and turquoise.
Not bad for a $10 screen, eh?

Plus, I still have the other side to paint!
