How do I remove PL200 from formica?

Approximately 20 years ago I used PL200 to seal the kitchen countertop to the wall. Over the years the extra PL200 left a residue/stain on the formica as you can see in the picture. Is there a way to remove it without damaging the formica?

I used a razor blade scraper to remove some glue from my formica. Just be sure and lay it as flat as you can as to not jab the corners of the blade in the formica. You might try some adhesive remover to soften it up. You can use a small paint brush to apply the remover to the glue that you want to remove.

I too would scrape off what you can carefully; for the residue, try mineral spirits

@Moxie Thanks so much for your reply and I thank everyone that replied with suggestions. My husband chose to use the razor blade method and then wiped with mineral spirits as you suggested, and it came out beautiful! He is doing a little at a time, but within the week it should be completed.

We use "Goo Gone" to soften adhesives and it has dripped on my formica and caused no problems. Once you have to basic glue off, if there is a stain, get some Clorox Kitchen Cleaner spray and see if it will remove the stain. I have white formica and nothing...not even straight bleach...works like this spray. Then put in a plastic kind of molding to cover up the stain onthe wallpaper.
  • Ann, the product once dry will only be removed by mechanical methods. It will not soften or come off using any chemicals or products such as goo gone etc. So your razor blade method is only method to use. Be sure you have a new blade and change it often if your removing a lot of the product. As soon as the blade gets dull, it will begin to scratch the surface of the laminate and you will have another issue on your plate to deal with. Mineral spirits is the only chemical that will remove this product before it dries, once dry your stuck using a mechanical method.

@woodbridge If you read the product data sheet on PL200 it even notes clean up with minrral spirits. It works well for resin ubber and silicone type based products.
  • Yes but it says only when its et. And depending what PL200 adhesive you use some can be cleaned with soapy water. But with any of them once dry only mechanical methods can be used after.

If a razor blade doesn't work, which would be my solution too, I would cover the place where the counter joins with 1/4" or 1/2" (depending on how far out the stain reaches. cove molding made of the plastic/resin stuff that washes well. This is available at all the box box hardware stores, and is cheap, but if done right doesn't look it..

There is a product called De-Solv-it. If this is adhesive this will work really well. I keep a bottle in the house all the time.It works well for other things too. I buy mine at an Ace Hardware Store.
