Best way to remove old paint from a large metal door hinge

by GG
I have an old door that I have sanded and sealed and am ready to re-paint. The hinges are large metal and appear to have at least two different coats of old paint on them. I've been trying to use a utility knife and scrape it off, but it's taking too long and the paint seem resistant. Any helpful hints?

Go to Walmart and buy their Purple cleaner in the Automotive department It is $5.46 for a gallon. Soak the hinges overnight and all you will have to do is rinse them off. I just finished cleaning hinges on 12 doors in 2 days without effort. The cleaner is also good for lots of other things. I used it full strength on the hinges, but watered down it is a great all around cleaner.

@Dee thank you! Can you tell me the name of it? We're very rural, and WalMart is 60 miles away. Is it something I can find in our local hardware store?

Try soaking it in fingernail polish remover.

It is called Purple Power. I have just always bought it in Walmart. It is a cleaner degreaser. I looked on line and some Lowes carry it. Auto zone and Advance Auto carries it too. Amazon carries Purple Power but it cost more. Hope this helps. Maybe you can order from walmart and have them mail it?? The stuff last forever, because it is very concentrated.

We've used oven cleaner. Just spray and let sit for several hours then rinse off.

You can also try boiling it in undiluted white Vinegar, or soaking overnight in undiluted Simple Green or Nature's Orange Cleaners. Good Luck!

@Jennifer G Thanks! Lots of good ideas on this. I'll have to decide on which one by this evening, I think. The door has to go back up soon.

@MagpiesHoardVintage.etsy.com Thanks. I had to put the door up temporarily for now, but when it comes down so I can sand the door frame, I'll try some of these ideas.
