Paperwhites

My daughter gave me Paper white bulbs with potting soil and a pretty pot to grow them in for the winter. My question is this will these bulbs if planted here in NH grow and come up next year is it the right climate for them ? These are the paper whites with pretty Olivia! Only one flower bloomed it had another bud but it seems to have died before blooming.

I sure wish I could help you because I LOVE Paperwhites. Mine flourished in a large vase w/water a couple months back, most bloomed, but other buds died before blooming. I just transplanted the bulbs to a very large planter in hopes they come up again next spring! We'll only have to wait and see what happens!

@Kim L see Douglas' comment I am afraid we are out of luck ! Well I did enjoy growing them indoors during this very cold and snowy winter and I have a nice picture .

I'm afraid they won't. I plant them out in my garden in Florida, but they are not winter-hardy where the ground freezes.

@Douglas Hunt thanks Douglas I was afraid of that because I have never seen them around here growing outside

Thanks Douglas - I live in So. Cal where the ground doesn't freeze, so I'm hoping to see them again next spring! Time will only tell!
  • I knew you would love this flower Mom! I am sorry you can't transplant them :( Maybe you can try for the heck of it??

I also live in CA... It doesn't freeze where I live either. I have mine in garden pots and when the foliage dies I cut them back and put the pots in the garden shed. They come back every year! Olivia is adorable by the way ;)

Dorette has a good point that I never thought about!! Transplant the Paperwhites into a large enough pot, cut the foliage back and put them in a dark place....like your basement or shed and bring them back into your home next spring! This happens to be the process one can do with all types of bulbs!

I've lived in CA all my life and my Mom dug up certain bulbs and stored them in her shed. If you have snow you would want to dig them up. Why don't you leave them in the pot and grow them again (inside).
