Stone fire places
we have a duel sided field stone gas/wood fireplace we use A LOT. The problem is the field stone around the openings on both sides has turned, well yucky colored. We have tried manydifferent "wash" products, but nothing works. Any ideas to clean it up. And we will continue to use all winter and fall?!

When you say Yucky colored, are you speaking of a black soot color or yellow tinge color? Muriatic acid will clean stone pretty well. Its not something that is easy to use as it is an acid. You will need to carefully duct tape at least a 6 mil plastic down around the entire area in which you plan on cleaning as the acid will cause spots on any stone that is left exposed should it drip on it. Also you need to protect the surroundings as well. Be sure you have a lot of fresh air in the area. Fans blowing both towards the outside and at the window or door openings is suggested. This can become pretty nasty fast. Then using proper eye protection, long rubber gloves take a stiff brush and a small bucket and scrub the stone area. This should do the trick. You can do a sample spot without all the fanfare to assure yourself that this will remove the stains. But use the safety equipment and a few fans and be sure to keep the kids and animals away while working with this.

Hello, yes I have used the muriatic acid to clean my stones, the other thing I did, because I thought the stones were a boring color, so I used 3 different color of stains (just regular old wood stain) and painted it on, and using rags to rub off and add different colors to each stone... turned out great, has lasted for years.
